Portugal Day 5: Medieval Castle of Óbidos, Ginja Tasting, and Beaches of Nazare!
getting there
We took a car, but you can easily see Obidos by train if you don’t mind the short ten ish minute walk from the station. Since in 2022 we stayed in Caldas da Rainha, the train option was cheap and doable. This year, in 2025, we went by car, and found plenty of parking despite it being June.
Things to see and do in Obidos
1. Walking about the outside of town

This isn’t the main street of shopping- it is just the sides and streets of the small medieval village you will inevitably walk to in order to get to the center. Its lovely whitewashed walls are well-complimented by splashes of yellow and a deep nautical blue. Classic Portugal! Don’t forget to stop and smell the pretty (non-fragrant by the way) bougainvilleas!
2. Ginja Tasting
First stop: Ibn Errik Rex

Second stop: Pasteleria Don Alfonso- my favorite!!

Last stop: Ginjinha da Porta 7, along with random windows throughout town

3. Medieval Castle Obidos!

4. Shopping!

Cloudy Afternoon in Nazaré

We arrived in Nazaré in the afternoon, and just toodled around the town for a bit before grabbing groceries at the local Pingo Doce (they have GREAT ready made meals for under €5, such as soups and sandwiches, that are a way better option than eating out all the time).
Well, that was our Friday! We spend a whole day in Nazaré and check out the beach on Sunday. On Saturday, we saw some epic churches!
Stay tuned for day 6 tomorrow! Epic Gothic Cathedral hopping in Alcobaça, Batalha, Fatima, and the checking out the Knight’s Templar in Tomar!
