Slovenia Days Eight and Nine: Piran, Pastries, and a Very Intentional Bottle Episode

“Sometimes you run into people who change your life for the better. These people are bartenders.”

🗺️ The Plan

  • Day Eight: Wander Piran, breakfast at Cafinho, find the mermaid carving, visit the Shell Museum, evening drinks and pasta
  • Day Nine: Mediterranean-vibes rest day by the water (though it turned into a full at-home spa day instead)

🥐 Morning in Piran

Breakfast at Cafinho Piran, savory over sweet (an eggs Benedict situation that I devoured, travel makes you hungrier than you expect). The chalkboard outside had a line worth remembering: “Sometimes you run into people who change your life for the better. These people are bartenders.” The view alone was doing a lot of work, genuinely reminded me of Santa Barbara, the kind of place I used to take myself on solo little dates.

Everyone here says ciao, a nice reminder of how close Italy actually is. Signage leans Slovene and Italian rather than English, another small tell.

🧜 Wandering the Old Town

Walked through the plaza, seeing how gorgeous it is in the morning with no tourists (trust me this is a game changer), before heading towards the beach looking for the mermaid carving (Pirani klesani kamni) tucked into the coastal rocks, walked along the promenade until I checked out the street art of some cool looking pirates.

🛍️ Boutique Shopping

Piran is so cute with all their little shops! You can buy a handmade little house (the gal was up front carving new ones as we walked around!), a little postcard prints for one euro, and a ceramic shop! Little thrift stores also dotted the town, in between tourist tchotchkes like flip flops, shirts, hats, and shot glasses. Go to the authentic shops, if you would!

⛪ Old Walls of Piran and Church

Just wandering around Piran, I stumbled into some amazing views of the city right by the Parish Church of St. George! To scale the Old Walls of Piran, you technically have to pay, but I don’t see why anyone would. You get great views without needing to spend money, and you can even touch and feel the walls without paying the fee.

🍹 The Cafinho Return

Came back to Cafinho later for the classic trio: a Hugo, plus small tasting pours of medica (honey liqueur) and borovničevec (blueberry liqueur), both Slovenian versions of traditional Eastern European liqueurs. The borovničevec reminded me of Romanian palincă in texture, jammy and thick, though palincă itself isn’t made with blueberries. The medica tasted like drinking thinned honey with a sharp finish.

Paired it with strawberry pancakes topped with Greek yogurt, which turned out to be the real star, sour yogurt against sweet strawberry puree. Simple enough to recreate at home as a regular yogurt bowl. Alcohol gave me a mild headache and general tiredness rather than fun, so that was a good note to self for the rest of the trip. Sat inside to dodge the cigarette smoke (still the one category where Europe loses to the US, alongside air conditioning), journaled for a while, and got complimented on my Slovene by the waitress.

🐚 Shell Museum

Detoured into the Shell Museum, €5, cash only. Verdict: skip it. Pretty shells, but tiny and thin on actual information, not worth the entry fee.

🍝 Dinner at Rostelin

Handmade pasta, and after two big meals already that day, still somehow starving by the time I got there. A small Mercator stop on the way home rounded things out with chips and a peach for later, those flat, sweet peaches in season right now are unbeatable.

🛋️ Day Nine: The Bottle Episode

Planned to hit the aquarium (Akvarij Piran) and get fried calamari at Fritolin Pri Cantini, try prekmurska gibanica at Café Neptun, and swim. Instead, day nine became a full at-home rest day: two cups of coffee, leftover cold pasta (stovetop wasn’t cooperating), repacking, and opening the bay window just to take in the view without leaving the room. No guilt about it, a true intentional bottle episode at the tail end of a busy trip, made easier by genuinely great AC and a private bathroom in the apartment.

A small personal aside: spent part of the downtime finalizing tattoo plans, landing on a lace-pattern bee for one ankle and reconsidering the dragon as solid blackwork for the other, small, whimsical travel tattoos taking shape either way.

🧭 If You Only Have One Day in Piran (Traveler’s Guide)

Since day nine turned into a rest day for me, here’s what a more active version of that day could look like if you want it:

On the water

  • Akvarij Piran, small but a nice rainy-day or midday-heat option.
  • Fritolin Pri Cantini for classic fried calamari and fries, a Piran staple.
  • Swim off one of the rocky access points along the peninsula’s edge (remember, Piran’s beaches are rocky, not sandy, so bring water shoes).

Food and drink

  • Café Neptun for prekmurska gibanica, a layered Slovenian pastry dessert worth trying at least once.
  • Cafinho Piran for the Hugo, medica, and borovničevec trio, small pours, so it’s easy to sample without overdoing it.
  • Rostelin for handmade pasta if you want a proper sit-down dinner.

Sightseeing

  • Walk the full Old Town loop: Tartini Square, the mermaid carving in the coastal rocks, Benečanka, and the Minorite Monastery. Check out Benečanka (Casa Veneziana) for interesting architecture.
  • Climb St. George’s bell tower for the best panoramic view in town.
  • Walk a section of the old city walls for a quieter, elevated view.

Skip it

  • The Shell Museum, unless you’re specifically a shell collector, it’s overpriced for what’s inside.

What I Learned These Two Days

  • Not every day of a trip needs to be maximized. A slow, indulgent rest day at the end is its own kind of good travel.
  • Small pours of local liqueurs are a smarter way to try new things than committing to a full glass.
  • Piran rewards aimless wandering more than a packed itinerary.
