Slovenia Day Two Škofja Loka: A Fairytale Town, Bees & Lace, and the Kindest People

“Škofja Loka felt less like a tourist destination and more like wandering through a town where people actually live. I think that’s why I loved it!”

🗺️ Today’s Plan

✈️ My Journey

🚌 The Bus to Škofja Loka

Okay! Bus to Škofja Loka left at 6:50 exactly; these busses are great! €4 to Škofja Loka. You can buy at the station or on the bus itself. I opted for the station so the lady could tell me which platform to get on.
One warning about this bus: Google Maps is WRONG. Make sure to route yourself to the bus station in Škofja Loka, NOT to Škofja Loka itself because it will (for some odd reason) tell you to get off at an earlier stop then walk 30 minutes into town. When in doubt- follow the locals.
At the main bus station in Ljubljana, right by my Airbnb, two other locals got on and both also asked for Škofja Loka. I knew that if they got off the bus, I should too. I also tracked the bus with google maps- all is well.
So! I had planned to be in Škofja Loka at 9:00 or 10:00, but ended up waking at 4:30 am. So much for beating jet lag. This actually works in my favor though, as I get to spend more time in Škofja Loka. I plan to settle in with a nice coffee and walk around the main streets first (and Capuchin bridge, and see if any of the churches are open!), then try the Loka castle. Like most things, it may open at 10:00, so I will rearrange some things.

I love my little travel journal. I feel like Mina Harker. A secretary, getting my notes and details in order. Besides, this gives me some time to organize my thoughts, listen to music, and eat my burek sirov. At first I thought burek was a specific food. Then, as I pass by a barkery labeled “burek,” and I remember seeing a lot more of this word, I’m starting to suspect it just means bread.
I tried for coffee this morning but couldn’t find the place in google maps- I walked all around the building and couldn’t see anything. I asked the burek place if they had coffee and she said no. Sigh. Being caffeine addicted is getting less and less charming. Ever since ditching alcohol (mostly sober), ditching caffeine sounds more and more appealing. Especially when traveling. My head aches a little. I do look forward to my cup of warm coffee and a nibble on my burek sirov- cheesy bread. It’s flaky and warm but not melty- it has like a feta texture and flavor (tangy!), but I believe it to be a local cheese. Not entirely sure. Anyways, more to come later!

🌉 Capuchin Bridge

I actually thought I’d miss it, but you have to cross this to get into Škofja Loka. Wow- amazing view!

🏛️ Wandering Through Town

Sweet, lots of locals! Pretty cobblestone streets and colorful buildings. Locals call out to one another from across the road from their Juliette balconies dripping with flowers.

So, I took candy from an old man this morning. Certainly NOT in the itinerary.

He was busking (guitar) on the main street of Škofja Loka. He said “come here,” and I did, because he seemed friendly and I didn’t want to be rude (but I was a bit scared). He, guitar on his knees and case below him, reached down and grabbed a handful of yellow wrapped candies, and told me to hold out my hand. I did, nervous as anything, and he plopped them in my hand! He said it was because I was “so sweet and pretty” and all sorts of compliments. I told him thank you (“hvala”) and have a good day (“dober dan”), then scuttled out so fast. Very nice folks!

On the note of language, it seems like “you’re welcome,” is “prosim,” which also means please. So nearly every time I say “hvala,” I get “prosim” in response which to me sounds like you’re welcome. Very interesting! I’m getting better at Slovenian every day. “A lahko _, prosim” does wonders. If you start a convo with “zdravo” or “dober dan,” locals will start chatting you up in slovene and seem to get confused when you say English. I want to memorize how to say “do you know English” or some equivalent instead of just stammering “English?” in an embarrassed tone.

🏰 Loka Castle

  • Tickets to the Škofja Loka Castle and Museum are €9.00
  • 2 hr walk through, lots of modern art, I took art classes in college so the yuppiness of it all was easy to break down
  • The castle and museum were great; I spent a total of 2 hours inside and outside the museum. I don’t think I retained much info inside. Quite a but was in Slovenian only- I took pics and will translate and read over tonight. I got a lot of bee and lace history- as I expected from what I researched about Slovenia before I came! Dragons are entirely a Ljubljana thing- they’re not popular outside of the main city it seems. I’m glad to incorporate lace into my dragon tattoo. I think a lace bee would be more representative of Slovenia as a whole, at least according to the Škofja Loka castle museum, but that’s alright.

This “open air museum” was incredibly tiny (my video shows you all of it), but it’s hard because I’m comparing it to Astra in Romania, which was amazing. The worker lady there was so kind; she gave me a tour and we had a nice chat about history! She showed me around the Skopar (straw cutter) house, like how they made their food and heated the place (no chimney, so the entryway/oven was coated in black tar). The house had been elsewhere in the region, but disassembled, transported here, and remade. Cool!

She thanked me for my interest in Slovenian history and told me she studied sociology. She asked if I was a student and I said no I graduated years ago and she was surprised she said I looked young (neon green hair has anti aging properties it seems). This reminds me of the Jože Plečnik where the worker asked if I was a student and I said no but then he gave me the student price anyways. Either he was deliberately giving me a discount or genuinely thought I was a college student still. Either way, nice folks! Everyone is so exceedingly kind.

Town in Antiquity

Early Modern History Section

Contemporary… my not so favorite…

You GOTTA press play to hear what sounds they played in this church. Confirm for me that I’m not crazy, please.

If you think this is weird- it gets weirder. You might have to enjoy the castle just to check out the strange modernisms. There’s a photo series of a man streaking, rotting fruit, close ups of an eyeball, a cool symbol of a necktie as a noose, defacement of Yugoslavian currency… interesting stuff!

What I do like about all Slovenian museums I’ve been to (a fair few) is that they always have a section dedicated at the very top floor for rotating modern, Slovenian artists. It gives them a platform to grow their art. I love the feeling of community it brings. Even if they are very experimental. I support the experimentation! Now enjoy these demon warbling from hell sounds.

🌲 The Walk That Went NOWHERE

AAARRRRGHHHHH! I hiked 30 minuted out of town to see what Google said was purportedly an “historical landmark.” Such a waste of time!!

Okay, at least I got to walk by cute neighborhoods, and it was mostly an easy walk that has plenty of sidewalk/pedestrian friendly roads, but this location (Domačija Pr’ Burjuc) stops off at some dude’s house. It’s not a castle or landmark or anything.

Please instead walk 30 minutes to see the Wild Loka Castle (Old Castle) Grad Divja Loka (Stari grad) instead. I don’t completely regret it, as seeing the neighborhoods/how people lived was cool, but with limited time I wish I saw the old castle instead. Oh well! Live and learn.

🍲 Lunch at Pr’ Pepet

I ate at Pr’Pepet and had lamb goulash (€15), a rose (€2.50, no orange wine sadly), and peach strudel (€5) to go. Service was great, views wonderful, food was soooo flavorful with a great sauce. Everything was perfect. It was €22.50 euro something, all told. I gave him my last €50 for change- I’ll need to grab more. I’ll count up my money tonight. I was not expecting to do this whole trip with cash, but hey, when in Ljubljana!

🚌 Back to Ljubljana

€3.50 for the bus ride back to Ljubljana. It left at exactly 1:10 PM as it said on the website I’ve been using. Excellent bus system, Slovenia!!

👕 One Last Thought

Everyone is really stylish here! Okay, I mean the young folks. 20 somethings here all dress like billie eilish and tiktok shop. Long denim shorts, oversized shirts, backwards hats, chunky jewelry. It’s like the 90s all over again. Wild to see this cultural suffusion- likely bc of online culture. I’ll bet the world of fashion is a lot more uniform because trends aren’t country to country as much as they used to be- now, fashion inspo is on your phone (whether you want it or not) instead of in magazines or in American TV. It’s cool! The fashion feels like a signifier of culture, of shared beliefs. I know uniformity is bad, but the familiarity in something as simple as fashion has a striking presence.

I don’t like taking pictures of strangers (who does??) so here’s the Škofja Loka bear 🙂

🛒 Aldi AKA Hofer

I grocery shopped and grabbed peanut butter (€2) and some premade waffles (€3) to eat for dinner/breakfast. The cost of this trip is starting to smart a wee bit. Oof.

🧭 Traveler’s Guide

Bus Tips

  • Buy tickets either at the station (with cash) or on the bus (tap to pay).
  • The Ljubljana buses have been incredibly punctual!
  • Route Google Maps to Škofja Loka Bus Station, not just “Škofja Loka.” Otherwise it may tell you to get off 30 minutes early and walk.
  • When in doubt, follow the locals.

Food

  • Burek sirov makes a fantastic breakfast.
  • Pr’ Pepet was one of my favorite meals so far.

Language

Words that got the most use today:

  • Hvala (thanks)
  • Prosim (please)
  • Dober dan (good day)
  • A lahko ___, prosim (Can I have a ____, please)

Things I’d Do Differently

  • Skip Domačija Pr’ Burjuc unless you actually intend to hike around neighborhoods and up a hill to some person’s house.
  • Visit the Old Castle instead!!!!!!! PLEASE. Do it for me. Take pictures. Send them to me so I can cry.

📸 Traveler’s Notes

Favorite moment

Talking with the museum guide when I first got the tickets, then outside again! What a sweetheart! I loved learning from her.

Kindest interaction

Either the lady I got coffee from this morning, who didn’t really say anything, just smiled and sang along to Breakaway by Kelly Clarkson (so cute!!), but made me feel calm while I waited for the 10:00 am opening time for the museum. OR the busking guitarist. Even though I was scared to take candy from a stranger (lol), he was so randomly kind that it really made my day.

Best food

Lamb goulash at Pr’ Pepet! If I could eat that every day, I would.

Biggest surprise

How much of Slovenian history centers around bees and lace rather than dragons! I’m starting to have second thoughts about my lace dragon tattoo… At least it has lace! And the dragon still represents Ljubljana, at least.
