Slovenia Day Five: Tobogganing, Bled Castle, a Trials by a Witch

“โ‚ฌ19 for that castle? I’m so sorry, but no.”

๐Ÿ—บ๏ธ Today’s Plan

๐ŸŒ„ Sunrise Walk to Bled Castle

The town clocktower struck 6:00 AM and that was apparently my cue. Found a bakery and coffee shop, open right next to each other, both at six, both entirely local. One table of what I think was a German family. Chocolate roll for โ‚ฌ1.75 (clearly not fresh that morning, but fine), coffee for around โ‚ฌ2.15. I’m learning fast that you can eat well here for under โ‚ฌ5 if you keep it simple.

The walk up to the castle was the real gift. Rosemary, lemon balm, chamomile, lavender, sage, even white sage, thyme, marjoram, all growing wild along the path. I want a garden like this so badly. Big old trees that have clearly been standing for centuries, doves and pigeons wandering around like they own the place. Also passed a genuinely strange AI-generated ad for the church (is this blasphemy?), and a little robot lawnmower doing its rounds. The future is here and it is mowing grass in Slovenia.

I got there at 6:48 AM, a full hour early, and just sat with the mountain view. Worth the whole walk on its own.

๐Ÿฐ Bled Castle

โ‚ฌ19 and I’m still thinking about it. The castle walls were nice. The museum was tiny and repetitive. If I had to pick one castle museum in this whole trip, I’d choose Bled Island over this, you at least get to ring the bell.

That said, a few good things came out of it:

  • Cool names collected from the exhibits: Wort and Bild (literally “word and image”), Arduin (king of Italy), Albuin (Bishop of Brixen), and the Patriarchate of Aquileia. Fantasy character names, all of them.
  • A modern exhibition on the patriarchy, done through lacework and giant paintings, women on one side offering caution, men on the other offering drinks and excitement. The wall text insisted it wasn’t making a political statement. I have thoughts about that, but I’ll spare you.
  • A Gutenberg-style printing press, though the prints themselves were oddly expensive (โ‚ฌ8 for something not even custom).
  • I watched an actual proposal happen at the viewpoint, an American couple, and I let the photographer who was setting up for it go ahead of me. Sweet moment to stumble into.

Verdict: skip it if you’re only doing one Slovenian castle. Do the hike for the view, not the ticket.

๐Ÿ’ St. Martin’s Church

WOOOOWWWW. This church is free, modern-colored Renaissance-style wall paintings, genuinely lovely. 10/10, would visit again. There’s a small hotel (called the Old Parish House, which some of my tour-mates tomorrow stayed at! So weird!) and cafรฉ right outside selling ice cream, coffee, lemonade, and Bled cake if you want to linger! Absolutely gorgeous.

Also- when you visit, look especially long at The Last Supper mural. Judas looks suspiciously like Lenin! It’s very possible he was modeled on Lenin by the artist, Slavko Pengov, who painted the frescoes in the 1930s.

๐ŸŽข Tobogganing at Straลพa

Twenty minute walk from St. Martin’s and I am so glad I did this. I went in with low expectations, thought it’d be a little gimmicky, and instead I was genuinely screaming the whole way down. It’s mostly gravity but it felt like a real rollercoaster, and you’re fully in control of your own speed. โ‚ฌ15 for one ride felt a little steep for how short it was, but it was worth every cent. There’s a multi-ride option for โ‚ฌ25 if you want to go again (I didn’t, but I understood the temptation).

It’s so hot, I should get a treat. Maybe some iced something or other. Feels like Thailand with how sweaty and hot it is, but I wish it had Thailand prices where you could just get like a smoothie or something for like a dollar or like an iced lemonade or something. I miss that. Moving forward!

๐ŸšŒ The Bus to Radovljica

A whole adventure in itself.

โ‚ฌ2 bus to Radovljica. I got on the wrong bus at first and the driver (stressed Iโ€™m sure) yelled at me โ€œNO! No no no!โ€ And I got so scared I jumped off the bus lol! The heat gets to everyone. I got on the right one and was literally the only passenger lol. We made another stop like 2 minutes away and picked up three locals who tapped their bus cards. THAT is the spot to wait! Bled union. The main bled bus station was so crowded and everyone was pushing and shoving to get on the lake Bohinj bus. It was strange, because the lake Bohinj bus DID say Radovljica in the scrolling text on the front. When in doubt- ask the driver, and hope they are having a good day! 15 minutes later, I was in the medieval town of Radovljica, one day ahead of schedule!

Pictured is not the bus but the breakfast/lunch place I went to for cheaper pastries. Pekarna Planika is the bakery, and a coffee shop (Bar Planinฤek) is right next door. Both open at 6:00 am, yay!

๐Ÿ The Bee Museum That Wasn’t

THE BEE MUSEUM IS CLOSED ON MONDAYS NOOOOOO. A genuine gut punch, given that this whole region prides itself on beekeeping. Trying again Wednesday, suitcase and all if that’s what it takes.

๐Ÿงช Witch Trials (AKA The Pharmacy Museum)

THE PHARMACY WAS AMAZING. This was the surprise star of the day. Do the fun tasks- trust me. The information was great, but the little interactive elements is what made it sooo fun. โ‚ฌ9 for adults, and worth it. If you like history, witchcraft, astrology, or herbalism, you will have a blast. It reminded me of a renaissance fair done right, lots of small interactive elements alongside the information. I made a wish with knots, sniffed a bunch of herbs, learned about old healing practices, and bought myself a little dragon ring for โ‚ฌ6. A full strawberry moon is tonight! I’ll untie my 9 knot wish spell and see if I am granted my wish. Lots of wishes in Slovenia!

๐Ÿฌ The Gingerbread Museum (Almost)

The gingerbread museum was super touristy and gimmicky. I was willing to forgive that for the low โ‚ฌ2 museum fee, but there was no one in the store. I wandered around, twisted and turned through halls, kept expecting to be stopped once I got too deep by some angry lederhosen worker, butโ€ฆ no one. Just me. I wandered around until I found an outdoor restaurant attached to the museum (that seems to be primarily what this establishment is), and found one gal in what best can be described as a green gingerbread doll outfit. I thought to myself โ€œwow, I could have robbed this place blind. Glad Iโ€™m a good person.โ€ Too sweaty and too socially drained to ask for a museum ticket (who would even give me the tour? The waitress?) I decided my gingerbreading experience would have to take place another day.

And that day is {here!!}

๐Ÿœ Thai Food!!!

I walked back to the bus stop, but not before grabbing โ‚ฌ9 worth of chicken pad thai for lunch and dinner. I said โ€œkop kun kaโ€ to the workers who appeared thai (and cโ€™mon, they run a thai food establishment) and they brightened up and responded in kind!! I love people!

Took the 15 minute bus back to Bled, sat under a gnarled old plum tree in the shade, and let the day settle. My host made me lemonade, I told her about the yellow finch and blue woodpecker in her garden, and she told me Slovenia has over 11,000 beekeepers. No wonder the Bee Museum being closed felt like such a personal loss.

๐Ÿ’ญ Final Thoughts

Today did not go as planned, though neither did yesterday. Bled castle I would skip (โ‚ฌ19 is exorbitant and made me rethink my life choices. When you start questioning whether you have enough money for dinner you know youโ€™ve messed up.), tobogganing was super fun and I would absolutely do it again (and even put myself in the mindset of maybe I oughtta zipline tomorrow even though Iโ€™m terrified of dying on those things bc ziplines around the world are notorious for safety issues), and gosh darn I am so made that that the bee museum (ฤŒebelarski muzej Radovljica) is closed on Mondayโ€™s. Iโ€™ve decided to try again Wednesday (they have actual BEES living in a HIVE there cโ€™mon!! I would be verklempt if I made it this far and didnโ€™t go, and beekeeping seems so important to slovenian culture!), but I will be dragging my suitcase behind me in the museum like an awkward albatross that I hope no one notices (or at least points out or shoots and kills me for being an obstruction to the peace). My family would tell me to just give up on the museum, but Iโ€™ve decided I look just young enough to keep making bad choices in public and face minimal backlash. Once I look like Iโ€™ve got a 401k or a mortgage (so when Iโ€™m 60) Iโ€™ll really be facing some consequences.

My lovely host made me a lemonade upon my return inside the house, I told her about the yellow finch and blue woodpecker visiting me in her front garden, and she told me about how Slovenia has over 11,000 beekeepers. Cโ€™mon!! I showered in cold water and am now sitting on the rickety wooden stairs as I write this. There is no internet in my room. I had to be a gen z, but I wanna to veg out with sometimes, sue me. Anyways, Iโ€™ve got a hugely busy day tomorrow, but Iโ€™m excited! Iโ€™ll need my feet and calves ready for the hiking. I hope to see a Zlatorog (the Goldenhorn) tomorrow! See you then!

๐Ÿงญ Traveler’s Guide

Bled Castle

  • โ‚ฌ19 is steep for what you get. Views are the real payoff, not the museum.
  • Go early if you go at all, before crowds and before the heat.

Tobogganing

  • Do it even if you’re skeptical. โ‚ฌ15 for one ride, โ‚ฌ25 for multiple.
  • You control your own speed, so it’s as tame or as wild as you make it.

Radovljica

  • Bee Museum (ฤŒebelarski muzej Radovljica) is closed Mondays. Plan around this.
  • Pharmacy Museum: โ‚ฌ9, genuinely excellent, interactive and fun.
  • Gingerbread Museum: โ‚ฌ2, more gimmick than substance, but cheap enough not to mind.

Food

  • Small breakfast under โ‚ฌ5, save real spending for lunch and dinner.
  • Burek is a reliable, cheap, protein-friendly option around โ‚ฌ3.

What I Learned Today

  • Sometimes the “must-see” castle is the least memorable part of the day.
  • A bus driver’s frustration is not the end of the world, just find the next bus.
  • Beekeeping is basically sacred here, and I now understand why.
  • The best souvenirs are sometimes a dragon ring and a good story about being yelled at on public transit.
